Arable map-
definition- a map that shows or represents certain areas that are arable (good for farming),
also shows which area have higher percentage of better arable land
Application- this helped people measure how much arable farmland was in Kenya
this map is helpful to farmers in need of land to farm for better growth of crops and ect.

Economic or Resources Maps

Defination-Maps that feature the type of natural resources or economic activity that dominates an region or an area. Cartographers use symbols to show the place of the natural resources or economic activities.
Application- This map is helpful when trying to figure which has the most natural resources or that has the most economic activites.
Example- When you see a symbol of an oil rig it means there is oil around that region or in the region of Maryland granite can be found.

Population Density Maps - A map of a particular area indicating the population by the average number of people in each square mile.
Application: This map can be used when trying to figure out the population density of a certain area that you would like to live or tracking human population in general.

Contour Maps - A map that shows you the height /elevation or the depth of a certain place, like mountains or oceans.
Application: this map can be used when trying to figure out how deep certain parts of the ocean are. For example, when a plane the two planes collided in the Hudson river, the needed to know how deep the river was in order to determine if there were any survivors or to determine if wreckage from the plane crash was going to be found.

Mental Maps
definition: maps that you see in your head of places you have gone to or seen
real life example: going down a street and remembering the street names

Reference Maps- show locations of places and geographical feautures
An example of a reference map would be a map of a city, a resort, a mall, or a country.




Generalized Maps- Maps that give the broad or big picture of a phenomenon, without showing any details of a specific place; displaying the change on a larger scale or showing its greater effect. Application- Global warming predictions of 2070-2100 temperature increase compared to the average temperatures of 1960-1990.

Thematic maps- show and tell a story. Shows movement of a geographic phenomenon. In other words, they track a change over time. Application- Tracking endangered species. Resident Pop. for the 50 states from 1990-2000

Road Maps
Illistrates the major highways, minor highways, railroads, airports and roads. It also shows points of interest and cities.

Terrain/Physical Maps
Definition: A map that shows the physical features of a given area
Real Life Application: This type of map is useful when you are trying to locate certain landmarks ( rivers, lakes) and also helps with planning routes ( you wouldn't want to drive through mountains if there's another way)
Example: The brownish/yellowish is raised land

Weather Maps:
Definition: A weather map is a map that shows meteorological patterns at any given time in a region. It can also showmeteorologicalphenomenonslikehurricanesand storms.
Application: You can use this map if you want to travel to another region so you know what to be prepared for. Or, if you are a meteorologist, this map is useful in predicting disasters like blizzards and hurricanes, so you can warn the population ahead of time.
Example: Say you live in Chicago, and are traveling to Florida for vacation, it is important to know the meteorological conditions there so you know what apparel to bring, activities to do there, and how long your trip should last.

TOPOGRAPHIC MAP:
Definition: A topographic map is a type of map characterized by large-scale detail and quantitative representation of terrain, usually using contour lines in modern mapping.
Application: any type of geographic planning or large-scale architecture; earth sciences and many other geographic disciplines; mining and other earth-based endeavours; and recreational uses such as hiking or, in particular, orienteering, which uses highly detailed maps in its standard requirements.

Mercator Map - is a map that makes the continents that are at higher latitudes larger than actually are, in both shape and size, however direction on this map is quite accurate.
Application: As you can see the continents North America, Europe, and Asia, look bigger in Latitude on this map.
