Food Desert DebateThis is a featured page

Prompt: After having read the two articles on food deserts and availability of healthy food to low income areas, tell us whether you think the problem is that of the government and big business for not providing equal opportunities to everyone (Nourishing New York's low-income communities), or whether you think the fault lies with the individual for not making the right food choices (Is Junk Food Really Cheaper?). You must have a minimum of 8-10 well constructed sentances for your argument. Think about this from all angles such as political reasons, economic, social, education level, and environmental. What will also strengthen your argument is if you use specific examples from the articles.

I have created two threads below. Choose the thread that you want to support. Do NOT simply create a new thread, instead, open the thread and click respond to make your comments. If you want to have an opportunity for extra credit, look in the other thread and debate someone else's response. Make sure it is an educated response (evidence always helps). To do this, click respond next to their response. If you want to respond to a specific sentance of theirs, highlight their text before clicking respond and it should carry over into your textbox response.

I support this article because it prooves that healthy foods arent available to everyone. People in low income areas aren't able to purchase healthier food, since most of it is expensive. It's the companies fault for pricing their food to high, and not distributing it well to everyone. If the food was cheaper and more accessable, perhaps these small communities wouldn't be as obese. There would most likely be a lot more healthy people. Keatley is doing the right thing to give out fresh produce to those who cant afford it. Healthy foods need to be cheaper and easier to get to as a Mcdonalds drive through is. That's the only reason why these people arent able to get the nutrients they need.
